From homelessness to hope: one woman’s journey with an Albuquerque non-profit

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Leighann, a mother to ten-year-old Ozzi, once faced a grim reality. “I mean, at that point I was like, I’m gonna just go to prison or I’m gonna end up dead,” she recalled. Despite a good upbringing and a soccer scholarship, Leighann struggled with mental health issues, leading her to self-medicate and eventually leading to addiction and homelessness in 2016.

The turning point came with the tragic loss of her father, coupled with the inability to see her son. This profound moment drove her to seek help. While in rehab, she discovered Saranam, a local non-profit dedicated to assisting homeless families.

Saranam’s comprehensive support, including housing, education, and life skills training, proved transformative. “We’re here trying to solve the same problem. Let’s get on the same bus,” Leighann said, reflecting on the organization’s mission.

Today, Leighann holds an associate degree and works as a dental assistant, with aspirations for a bachelor’s degree. She hopes her story demonstrates the potential for change and the effectiveness of local programs. “If we had more and more programs, or if Saranam can get larger, it would help so many,” she said.

Saranam reports a 77% success rate in helping families transition from homelessness. Most adults who complete the program attain a GED, post-secondary education, or vocational training, setting the foundation for a stable future.

Leighann’s journey is a testament to the power of community support and the possibility of a brighter future. “I just look forward to him having a great future. And our relationship. And that he knows that his mom will always be there for him,” she expressed.
