G Flip Reveals Album #3 Plans Ahead Of Super-Exclusive Melb Gig In The BWS Cool Room

ARIA-winning multi-instrumentalist G Flip is the next star to perform in a BWS Cool Room, in their hometown of Melbourne at Moon Dog HQ on September 13. G joins a stellar list of artists who have been donned with the honour of playing these exclusive events around Australia, including FISHER, Armani White and Memphis LK.

The BWS Cool Room is renowned for putting on shows that are sensory experiences, with the “purpose-built stage-come-fridge” creating a unique concert environment that is tailored to the resident artist.

G told The Music that they have been getting acquainted with the Moon dog HQ location in preparation for the show. They said, “Moon Dog is the ultimate partnership. Sometimes I find the smaller shows to be a little bit more fun than the supermassive [venues that hold] thousands and thousands of people. So I think the intimacy is going to be great. And the setup is going to be great. BWS has been down there doing measurements to get the Cool Room looking flashy. It’s going to turn out great.”

G Flip On Defiant Authenticity, Reinventing Their Live Show & Being A Non-Binary Icon

G is no stranger to the BWS Cool Room, announcing last year that they would be collaborating on a new alcoholic juice drink, BOX, which G launched in late July. G and BWS worked on the side-project alongside the artist’s already stacked year, a creative process parallel to making music. “It only felt right to celebrate the launch of my alcoholic juice BOX with an epic BWS Cool Room performance! I can’t wait to get on that stage, sip some BOX and smash some drums,” They said.

“When I pitched the idea of BOX to Moon Dog, [I was] like, ‘I want the cover of it to be branded just BOX [in] like big, thick letters.’ The branding is very visual, you can see it straight away. And I think if you interpret that in a musical way, you know, I always try [to make] the five seconds of the song be interesting, or the first lyric be interesting to grab someone’s attention. I think there are some similarities in starting your own business and an alcoholic brand.”

G has had a huge year already, taking out #2 in the Hottest 100 with The Worst Person Alive, winning Album Of The Year at the j Awards and surprising fans with a stunning Like A Version cover of Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift. Unbelievably, when asked if 2025 would be the year they would slow down, G told The Music they’re instead hoping to start recording new music.

“I really want to get started on album number three. Yeah, I want to start getting back to creating and getting back in my personal studio and tinkering around and then get cracking on the [third] album for sure.”

G continued, “I want to buy some new synths and just have some solo writing time to see what’s inspiring me. I’ve just been so on the going on tour for so long that I haven’t really had like, sitting days with my instruments, which is all I used to fucking do! And you know, kind of just like, start the new chapter of creativity for me. And then once I have a bit of alone time I’ll get a better grasp [on the direction] and then I’ll bring in some of my teammates, Ian and Aiden, who I did the last album with.”

G let us in on their process when discussing how they decided to perform Cruel Summer for Like A Version, which aired in January of this year but is still getting played and enjoyed as if it was yesterday. G said, “I’m a massive Taylor fan, especially of that song – on my US tour last year [it was] on our pre-show playlist. [I started thinking] ‘If you take out the drums of Cruel Summer and you add me on kit, and then you just follow some of the other instruments along with my kick and snare pattern, I could…’ I already had this version in my head. So yeah, it was a pretty easy choice for me to do that song.”

We couldn’t let G go without telling us which they preferred between the BOX Apple Guava and BOX Tropical Bang. “They’re both pretty awesome,” they said. “I think they both taste amazing. And obviously I’m the creator so I’m going to say that – but I just think if anyone tries them, they’ll be like, ‘Oh, this slaps,’ because who doesn’t like juice? Anyway, my favourite is Apple Guava by just a little bit.”

BWS Cool Room shows are notoriously exclusive and hard to get tickets for, but punters can throw their hat in the ring and enter the competition here. Victorian residents will go into the draw to win double passes, whereas interstate winners can enter to win a Golden Ticket which includes a double pass, entry to the show, flights, accommodation and a meet-and-greet with G.

Competition entry closes on September 1, 2024 – T&Cs apply. Full T&Cs available here.
