Gallup woman to serve 5 years probation after drunk driving crash killed son

GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – A 27-year-old woman from Gallup was sentenced in federal court after a drunk driving crash that killed her 8-month-old son in 2022. Mariah Chapo will serve five years of probation, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) says.

Chapo pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter after driving while intoxicated with her son unsecured in the back seat of her vehicle, the DOJ says. Chapo rolled the vehicle, and her son died at the scene.

When responders arrived at the scene, they found an empty bottle of vodka in the vehicle and Chapo reportedly had a blood alcohol content of around 0.12, the DOJ says.
