Author George R.R. Martin has offered up an update on the long-in-development Game of Thrones spin-off Ten Thousand Ships, revealing who is writing the project.
In a recent blog post, Martin congratulated writer Eboni Booth for winning a 2024 Pulitzer Prize in the “Letters and Drama” category, for her play Primary Trust. Martin also revealed that Booth has been working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a series set to follow the Dornish warrior queen Nymeria and the Rhoynar.
What is the Game of Thrones prequel Ten Thousand Ships about?
As of now, not a whole lot is known about Ten Thousand Ships outside of the fact that it will focus on Nymeria and the Rhoynar, a people from the eastern continent of Essos in Martin’s novels. The group of people were only mentioned a handful of times in HBO’s Game of Thrones, as was Nymeria.
The post marks the first major update on Ten Thousand Ships in some time. Two years ago, the series was announced by Martin as one of several in-development projects based on Game of Thrones at HBO.
At the time, Amanda Segel (Person of Interest) was said to be acting as showrunner, with Martin having said she had turned in several drafts for the series at the time. However, that doesn’t look to be the case anywhere with Booth now handling writing duties for the show.
Martin joked that everyone was excited about the upcoming show, but didn’t know how they would be paying for “ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”
