The Bristol band, who released their fifth studio album ‘Tangk’ earlier this year, headlined the Other stage today (June 28) and kicked of their set with ‘Idea 01’ before jumping into ‘Colossus’. During the second song of the night, frontman Joe Talbot commanded the crowd to “Split into two halves, nice and wide” before yelling “Viva Palestino” and wrapping up the track.

“Thank you for giving us your love and energy tonight Glastonbury festival. This song is a celebration of all the insults I had been given throughout the years,” Talbot said later in their set, introducing the song ‘I’m Scum’. He also dedicated the track to “The people of Palestine and you (the crowd).”

He also led the crowd into a chant of “Fuck the king”, which Talbot referred to the “new British national anthem”.

IDLES also brought out Danny Brown for a collaboration on their track ‘Pop Pop Pop’ in which the rapper adlibbed a rap verse towards the end of the song.

While performing ‘Benzocaine’, guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan also took a moment to jump into the crowd and play the track from the pit and while crowd surfing.

Elsewhere, a tween jumped on stage and joined in on the band’s performance of ‘Danny Nedelko’. Talbot also took a moment to explain how the track is “about all the immigrants who helped build this country” and made sure that a raft filled with dummies dressed as people that was being passed around in the crowd was shown on the screens.

To end the night, the band played ‘Rottweiler’ in which Bowen took a moment to jump into Shania Twain’s ‘You’re Still The One’ before ending the night with the words ‘Ceasefire Now’ displayed on the screens while the band led the crowd into a chant of the phrase.

Speaking to NME ahead of their Glastonbury performance, the band opened up about their headlining slot at the Other stage. “It’s like incremental stuff like, we’ve been doing this for 15 years and each step is just magic. It sounds boring but like we’re just gonna keep doing what we are doing. We will headline the Pyramid stage at the appropriate time when we can fill the field with people that like and know our songs,” shared Talbot.

“We’re capable of doing a show better than a lot of headliners I think,” he added, “But, we’re not there yet because it’s bums in seats, we’re not fucking dumb but we are good.”

In other Glastonbury news, LCD Soundsystem performed a euphoric set at this year’s edition of the bash, with the likes of Dave Grohl and Noel Gallagher watching side-stage.

Elsewhere, Kings Of Leon have been seemingly teasing a secret set at this year’s edition of the music fest.

Today (June 28), the band have taken to social media to share a video of their performance at Worthy Park in 2008. In the accompanying caption, they teased that they aren’t too far from the festival grounds: “Had a great time at Glastonbury in 2008. It’s only a short trip away from our little gig at Hyde Park…”

Elsewhere, Kenya Grace covered Britney Spears, Daniel Bedingfield and more during her first-ever Glastonbury set.
