On Saturday, June 28, Goose blew through Philadelphia for a performance at TD Pavillion at the Mann. For the third to last show in its summer tour, the beloved indie groove outfit kept things fresh with a thrilling twelve-track set that bridged time-tested fan favorites and coveted rarities. Beyond its standard fare, the band floored fans with two top-tier sit-ins, welcoming Mt. Joy frontman Matt Quinn and Blind Melon’s ace axeman Rogers Stevens, who supported a treatment of the band’s classic “No Rain.”

Goose kicked off its first set with 2022’s “The Whales,” then cycled through fan favorites “Silver Rising” and “Atlas Dogs,” on the way to the Vasudo original “Flodown,” which numbers among the band’s essential live tracks with a staggering 137 stagings. The band brought the energy up a level when it dipped into Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” a favorite cover for the quintet, which was given new depth and credibility with support from Stevens, who has helmed the alt-rock combo since its 1990 debut and saw widespread acclaim for the 1993 breakthrough hit.

Immediately after, the band called Philly local Quinn to the stage to support a treatment of “California Magic,” celebrating a shared perspective in the scene. Goose and Mt. Joy fans most recently saw worlds collide in January, when Rick Mitarontonda joined Mt. Joy in Mexico for “Let Loose.” After this second sit-in, the band trucked steadily to the show’s close, giving a ripping and expansive “Hungersite” and cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” before wrapping with an encore of “Arcadia.”

Goose will return to the stage tonight at Queens, N.Y.’s Forest HIlls Stadium for the penultimate show in its summer tour, then wrap the run with a grand finale home state show at New Haven, Conn.’s Westville Music Bowl.
