Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has announced the third wave of artists set to perform at its completely free annual festival, set for Oct. 4-6 at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This latest cohort to join in the 24th annual celebration is led by the legendary soul musician and activist Mavis Staples, Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird’s Cunningham/Bird duo and Cat Power Sings Dylan ‘66. Today’s release follows the first and second lineup announcements which promised Emmylou Harris, Greensky Bluegrass and the special 50th Anniversary celebration of Big Star’s Radio City, and precedes the final wave of artists, to be revealed on Sept. 3.
“I love Hardly Strictly,” Staples offered in a release on her addition to the lineup. “It’s one of our favorite places to play in the world. I can’t wait to get back there this fall.”
Jessica Pratt, Steve Earle and Carlene Carter are also set to take the stage in the fall, joining previously billed artists like The Wood Brothers, Tony Trischka’s Earl Jam, Fruition, Sleater-Kinney and Haley Heynderickx. Along with singer-songwriters Earle and Carter, Texas-based outfits like Matt the Electrician and Wonder Women of Country (Kelly Willis, Melissa Carper, and Brennen Leigh) will also appear at the three-day event, in addition to “punk poet” John Cooper Clarke. With so many beloved acts spanning genres and eras on the ticket, the 2024 showing seems to be more stacked than ever.
The third dispatch from Hardly Strictly seems to be the most rooted in its Golden City Roots, with SF-natives like Pratt, Bay Area cumbia band Combo Tezeta and six-piece ensemble Wreckless Strangers. Also in the spirit of honoring the city’s roots, many of the musicians will also perform late-night “Out Of The Park” shows with proceeds going toward Sweet Relief Bay Area Musicians Fund, the local branch of an organization that provides financial assistance to music industry professionals.
