Heavy rain possible this week as the monsoon continues

The monsoon will stay active this week, bringing daily rain and storm chances to parts of New Mexico. Temperatures will also finally be a little cooler.

Monsoon moisture began returning to New Mexico late last week and this weekend, and that moisture continues to stick around to start this week. Parts of the state, including the Albuquerque Metro, woke up to rain this morning. Scattered showers and storms have developed Monday afternoon across a large part of New Mexico, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the state as well. Temperatures are also cooler across the state today, with highs in the 80s in Albuquerque for the first time in a month. Roswell has finally ended the third longest stretch of triple-digit heat on record today as well. Showers and storms will be ending overnight, with dry weather to start the day Tuesday.

Storm chances will continue everyday this week for parts of New Mexico, with the drier areas in northwest and far southeast New Mexico. Locally heavy rainfall will still be possible with storms everyday, as they will also be very slow movers. This could bring more burn scar flash flooding. Temperatures this week will also stay closer to normal in the afternoons.

A backdoor cold front will move into eastern New Mexico Friday, and this will bring even heavier rainfall to the Sacramento Mountains and southeast New Mexico into the weekend. Burn scar flash flooding around Ruidoso will be very likely starting Friday, with potentially life-threatening flash flooding possible due to the heavy rain. Temperatures will even fall in to the 80s this weekend for Roswell and Las Cruces. Rain and thunderstorm chances will continue for parts of New Mexico into Labor Day.
