High school football: Live updates from Friday night’s games

We know that high school football fans live for these Friday nights when there is a big game happening under the stadium lights.

That’s why the Southern California News Group has put together the biggest — or you could call it the best — team of reporters in the area, so that fans get more of what they love — scores, updates, highlights, breaking news, game stories, videos and photos.

And that’s why we have reporter John W. Davis serving as our “Friday Night Football” host online, so that you don’t miss any of the great action happening in this large area.

John will be here for the pregame, throughout the games and then wrapping things up at the end of the night with a special video.

Go to a game and we’ll provide the updates and highlights on your mobile device. Stay home and follow the action with us on your laptop.

The countdown to kickoff has started … who’s ready?

Games we’ll be following closely tonight

Servite will play at Murrieta Valley tonight. Michigan State commit Leo Hannan and San Diego State commit Quaid Carr give the Friars an experienced quarterback-running back duo.

A rivalry between Bishop Amat and St. Paul is being renewed tonight in the San Gabriel Valley. Both teams won their season openers but all of that goes out of the window when you are playing for area pride.

Sierra Canyon is hosting Oaks Christian tonight. The Trailblazers are aiming for back-to-back appearances in the Division 1 playoffs. However, they could be tested by a quality Oaks Christian team.

Long Beach Poly is hosting Lincoln of San Diego tonight at Veterans Stadium. The young Jackrabbits team is looking for their first win of the season but Lincoln has one of the top quarterbacks in the nation in Oregon commit Akili Smith Jr., a four-star recruit. Smith’s father was selected No. 3 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1999 draft.

Another top game will take place in Gardena tonight. Serra will host Warren. It is an annual nonleague rivalry game between two Top 20 teams in the CIF Southern Section. However, what makes this season’s matchup different is both teams are coming into the game 0-1, which means one of those premiere programs will begin the season 0-2.

Lastly, Santa Margarita at Centennial could also produce fireworks. It’s a nonleague game between two teams likely destined for the Division 1 playoffs. Who knows, it could even be a preview of a playoff game in November.
