Hoodoo Gurus Expand 'Stoneage Romeos' Anniversary Tour (Again)

Hell hath no fury like the Hoodoo Gurus fans determined to see them play Stoneage Romeos in full – the band have just announced that another four shows on their upcoming tour have sold out, with three more added to the itinerary.

The hotly anticipated Back To The Stoneage tour now spans a mighty 18 dates, starting with their recently announced second Thirroul show on Wednesday November 13 (when the Gurus will take over Anita’s Theatre alongside Tumbleweed). In case you missed it, last week also saw the band announce second dates in Perth and Brisbane.

Today (May 21) they’ve announced additional shows in Melbourne (Thursday November 21 at The Forum, supported by Adalita) and Sydney (Sunday December 1 at the Enmore Theatre, also with Tumbleweed), as well as a third show in Perth (Saturday December 14 at the Astor Theatre, once more with Rinehearts).

Tickets to the Sydney show are on sale now, with the other two going on sale at 10am local time this Friday (May 24) – head here to grab yours.

Upon announcing the tour earlier in May, Gurus frontman Dave Faulkner said of the celebratory run: “Stoneage Romeos was a pivotal album for us and many of its songs have remained live favourites ever since. It’ll be great to play some of those ‘less-travelled’ songs from it on this tour – even though that means we’ll be playing longer sets to fit everything else in as well. Hah! To my mind that’s a win-win situation.”

The news coincided with a deluxe reissue of Stoneage Romeos on vinyl, which in addition to the full original album includes their 1984 Live At The Chevron concert recording, a seven-inch record featuring the axed second part of the track Hayride To Hell (dubbed The Showdown), an A2 poster and an exclusive postcard. It’s since sold out, but you can still drool over photos of the set here.

Stoneage Romeos was initially released in March of 1984, sporting the timeless singles Leilani, Tojo, My Girl and I Want You Back. It was an immediate hit for Hoodoo Gurus, earning widespread critical acclaim and winning Best Debut Album at the 1984 Countdown Awards.

Reviewing a Hoodoo Gurus show in 2022, Mick Radojkovic wrote for TheMusic.com.au: “Despite the decades past, the fitness of the whole band was evident. Brad Shepherd, in between ripping out killer guitar solos, was doing air-splits and solid rock poses during the high-energy performance. You wouldn’t have known that Nik Rieth hadn’t been on drums since the start. He nailed the fills, matching the airdrums of the crowd and was a more than excellent replacement for long-time drummer, Mark Kingsmill. Richard Grossman was a rock on the bass, driving the band expertly, with a swagger and a grin.”
