The ongoing Wuxia C-drama Joy of Life Season 2, starring Zhang Ruoyun and Li Qin, released episode 23 on May 27, 2024. The episode primarily focuses on Fan Xian (Zhang Ruoyun) saving the chancellor’s life.
Fan Xian and Qi Nian help Da Bao pack his belongings as he departs with them, leaving the chancellor behind. The sweet bond between the chancellor and his son, who has a cognitive disability, warms Fan Xian’s heart.
Fan Xian looks for Shi Chan Li but fails to find him anywhere. After a long search, he finds him sitting gloomily at the corner of a staircase. He is heartbroken that the emperor has conducted a shoddy investigation and that the royal report has labelled it as a mere accident caused by flammable objects. Shi Chan Li cannot understand how a natural fire burned down an entire town. He is certain that the one who caused the fire is someone powerful and that someone tampered with the report to shield him.
Fan Xian has also been suspicious in the past. When Shi Chan Li begs him to investigate who snatched his home, Fan Xian accepts his plea. Furthermore, he accepts Shi Chan Li as his retainer.
Meanwhile, He Zong Wei joins the censorate as its newest member. He struggles to win the other members’ trust. He announces that the late Lai Ming Cheng was his benefactor and pays him his respect. When he hears that Fan Xian was the one who cause Lai’s death, he gets enraged and rushes to his residence to speak with him.
Zong Wei falls to his knees and asks Fan Xian to punish him. He wants to gain the censorate members’ trust by being betrayed by Fan Xian, whom they consider their enemy.

President Chen Ping Ping of the overwatch council visits Fan Xian’s residence, accompanied by a masked killer. He hands over a booklet containing details of the fifth bureau of the overwatch council. Ping Ping details the responsibilities of this bureau. Unlike the first bureau, this one is stationed outside the kingdom and investigates the black cavalry. Ping Ping instructs Fan Xian to study the booklet as he will soon be in charge of the fifth bureau. Furthermore, he also informs Fan Xian that following Chancellor Lin, many old officials will retire
Fan Xian joins Chancellor Lin as he leaves the kingdom. He can see how Lin is heartbroken to leave his kids behind. Fan Xian asks the driver to take a different route. To Lin’s surprise, his kids, Wan Er (Li Qin) and Da Bao are waiting to bid him farewell. Fan Xian’s compassion impresses him.
While rereading the booklet, Chen Ping Ping’s words start to make sense to Fan Xian. He comes to know from Qi Nian that another official who recently retired was also killed by assassins on his way out of the capital. He worries that the Chancellor is in danger. But they do not have enough backup to save him from impending danger. But without giving it a second thought, he rushes to protect Chancellor Lin.
Luckily, Fan Xian runs into Prince Cheng Ruo, who is training his troops in the forest. They successfully stop the black cavalry soldier before they can reach the Chancellor. Jing, the general of the cavalry, announces that they are here following a military order. However, since Fan Xian holds a higher position than the president, ignoring his orders would be a military crime, and he agrees to retreat.
Chancellor Lin reminds Fan Xian to be careful of the majesty as his moves are unpredictable. Fan Xian is not afraid to defy him when it comes to serving justice.
