The ongoing Wuxia C-drama Joy of Life Season 2, starring Zhang Ruoyun and Li Qin, released episode 29 on May 30, 2024. The episode primarily focuses on Fan Xian’s (Zhang Ruoyun) visit to the royal temple. Fan Xian comes to know about the flower festival that takes place in the temple every three years. He thinks it’s an open invitation to assassins. But Commander Gong ensures that the temple is even more secure than the capital.
Meanwhile, they bump into the craftsmen of the temple. Their conditions make Fan Xian feel dejected. The artisans are all tied to chains and are wearing raggedy clothes. Gong reveals they must leave the temple premises as no outsiders are allowed during the festival. Fan Xian urges him to let the laborers go home. He argues that no festival is worth keeping them confined for life.
He gets angry when Commander Gong calls it a small sacrifice to ensure the emperor’s safety. Fan Xian, along with Commander Gong and his troops, enter the temple to keep their flower pots in place for the upcoming festival. Fan Xian climbs up to the highest terrace of the temple to catch a better view of the premises. Then he hears footsteps on the ground.
Gong ensures him that there is no one but them in the temple. Meanwhile, Fan Xian loses control and almost falls down from the terrace. But Gong grabs his arm and pulls him back at the right time. Gong asks him to take care of his health as the emperor is fond of Fan Xian. He has even delayed the festival just for his sake.
The episode further shows that Fei Jie had previously been attacked by an unknown assassin who left him to die. The Overwatch Council rescued him and treated him. He wakes up with a foggy memory. He finds himself surrounded by members of the council.
Joy of Life Season 2 ep 29: Zhang Ruoyun protects the emperor from assassins
President Chen Ping Ping visits the council to check up on Fei Jie. Fei Jie believes that it was Wu Zhu who attacked him on Mount Cang. He reveals the case he has been investigating. It is the case of a murderer from Jiangnian who disappeared after arriving in the capital. Fei Jie asks Ping Ping if he knows who is hiding him. But Ping Ping does not look bothered and leaves without giving any answer to Fei Jie.
Meanwhile, Fan Xian, along with other officials, leaves for the Xuankong festival to attend the flower festival. But Fan Xian’s carriage is stopped by Ye Zhong, a garrison in charge of the capital’s defense and military affairs. He invites Fan Xian to a duel. At first, the proposal catches Fan Xian off guard, but soon, he takes him down.
Ye advises Fan Xian to be extra careful during his stay at the temple. According to the emperor’s decree, no guard will be present at the temple during the festival. Furthermore, no official other than Fan Xian can fight. Therefore, assassins may use this opportunity to hurl attacks on the temple.
As soon as they arrive at the temple, a fire breaks out. Fan Xian instructs Qi Nian to assist Lord Ye in finding the source of the accident. Meanwhile, he rushes to protect the emperor. The investigation reveals that someone deliberately started the fire to create chaos.
Fan Xian does not want to take any risk and urges the emperor to immediately return to the capital. But the emperor is not ready to listen to him. As he sits on his throne, several assassins attack him from different directions. Fan Xian’s swiftness saves him as he takes down all of them.
