The upcoming release Kalki 2898 AD is a mythological sci-fi dystopian film directed by Nag Ashwin. The project features a star cast, with Prabhas playing the lead role. He is accompanied by Deepika Padukone as the female protagonist and Amitabh Bachchan portraying the character of Ashwatthama.

Per DNA, ancient scriptures have revealed that Ashwatthama was the son of Guru Dronacharya. He is mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata as having played a crucial role during the battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He fought for the Kauravas as his father was loyal to the throne of Hastinapur.

Nag Ashwin has revealed that the upcoming film is based on the events of Mahabharata. According to Indian Express, Ashwin said at an event, “Our film starts in Mahabharata and it ends in 2898. That’s the title of the film, it’s called Kalki 2898 AD. It spans 6,000 years of distance and time.”

Kalki 2898 AD: Was Ashwatthama immortal?

During the battle between the Kauravas and Pandavas, Dronacharya and Ashwatthama came out to be undefeatable. Lord Krishna tricked Dronacharya into believing Ashwatthama was killed when, in fact, an elephant of the same name died. As a result, Dhrishtadyumna beheaded Dronacharya and Ashwatthama could not kill any Pandava in revenge.

As the battle ended, Ashwatthama took up the Brahmastra against the Pandavas. However, when Arjun did the same, Lord Krishna advised him to avert the Brahmastra. Unfortunately, Ashwatthama could not do it. He then launched it into the womb of Abhimanyu’s wife and killed his unborn child. An angered Lord Krishna cursed Ashwatthama with immortality as long as life prevails on earth.

Despite the trailer’s release, the story of Kalki 2898 AD remains a mystery. Fans have come up with various theories about the film so far, but the makers have not confirmed them.

Kalki 2898 AD will be released on June 27, 2024.
