[1] Trial for father charged under Bennie’s Law starts Monday – The trial for the first parent charged under Bennie’s Law is set to begin Monday. 39-year-old William Brown is accused of negligently making a firearm available to a minor resulting in the death. Police say his 14-year-old son, Porfirio Brown, shot a teenage girl at their Questa home last July. William Brown is facing a fourth degree felony, which comes with a maximum of 18 months.

[2] 1 person suffers life-threatening heat illness in desert near Sunland Park – One person is in the hospital after suffering from heat related illnesses at the southern border. The Sunland Park Fire Department says Border Patrol Officers found the person Saturday in the desert near Mile Marker 143 along New Mexico Highway 9. Responders used an ice bath and ice sheets to cool the person down before transporting them to the hospital.

[3] Hot, dry and breezy weather with high fire danger – Today will be mostly sunny across the state. Only a couple of storms will be possible in southeast New Mexico during the evening. Breezes will pick up during the afternoon to around 35 mph in western and eastern New Mexico. The breezier winds and extremely dry air in the state will lead to high fire danger, and Red Flag Warnings will be in effect in western New Mexico, the Upper Rio Grande Valley and the northeast highlands. Temperatures will be warmer than normal, climbing into the 80s, 90s and 100s.

[4] College students from around the world to compete in Spaceport America Cup – More than 150 teams from six continents will be participating in the 2024 Spaceport America Cup. Students will show off their rocket design and building skills. The competition starts June 17 at the Las Cruces Convention Center and will move to Spaceport America from June 19-22.

[5] Albuquerque all-girl flag football team invited to NFL Flag Championship game – A New Mexico flag football team, Twisted Sister Flag Football NM, has been invited to a flag football championship hosted by the NFL in Canton, Ohio. The team is expected to play three games in mid-July, but could play more if they do well. The team is looking for a sponsor and a couple of players between the ages of 16 to 18 to complete the roster
