Friday’s Five Facts

[1] Santa Fe community rallies around teen diagnosed with leukemia – 14-year-old Dominic Harvey-Montoya, a wide receiver for Santa Fe High School’s football team, was just days into his freshman year when his mom noticed something was off and took him to the doctor. Dominic was diagnosed with leukemia. Instead of starting the football season, he is starting treatment at UNMH. The team started a fundraiser for Dominic’s family. The football program will be accepting more donations and cards for Dominic and Santa Fe High School’s upcoming football game.

[2] Santa Fe County’s connecting road project completed after decades of planning – The connector roads project cuts roadways through areas that haven’t been developed in Santa Fe County. It includes six new roundabouts, nearly eight miles of bike lanes and a little over 8,000 feet of critical new water lines in the community college district. The county says it will be putting the finishing touches on the roundabouts in the coming weeks.

[3] Cold front to ignite more storms in New Mexico – As temperatures across the region rise from the morning school commute into the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and near 90 for a few areas by the afternoon, an influx of moisture in the air, along with just enough daytime heating, will lead to some areas receiving at least some heavy doses of rainfall

[4] 100th Burning of Zozobra – Tonight marks the 100th burning of Zozobra. Gates open at 4 p.m., with entertainment scheduled throughout the evening. Zozobra is expected to be burned after 9 p.m. The burning will be held at Fort Marcy Park. Those who go to the event are asked to leave bags, purses, and backpacks at home. If you do bring a bag, it must be a clear bag and be an approved size.

[5] New Mexico State Fair announces Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge contestants – The New Mexico State Fair released a list of the ten restaurants that will be competing in this year’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge. Two awards will be up for grabs, the blind judging and people’s choice. Oso Grill from Capitan won both awards last year. The 2024 New Mexico State Fair is from September 5 – 15.
