Monday’s Five Facts

[1] Ruidoso-area residents start heading home; officials warn of what lies ahead – Ruidoso residents will begin returning home Monday. Officials released a list of locations that will be allowing re-entry, saying it was limited to full time residents. Emergency officials ask the public to prepare for the worst and exercise excessive caution. Returning evacuees are recommended to take Highway 70 when coming into Ruidoso.

[2] APD releases data on 7 police shootings from 2023 – APD released details on seven shootings that happened during the latter half of 2023. All seven of the incidents involved a suspect armed with a gun. The review shows that one of the seven cases was out of policy. APD regularly conducts reviews of officer involved shootings with the goal of finding patterns the department could improve upon.

[3] Warmer temperatures and lower storm chances – Temperatures continue to climb through the middle of next week, with highs back into the 90’s and 100’s for most of New Mexico. Very isolated storm chances will still be possible, with the driest days early this week. A more-pronounced monsoon pattern sets up again later this week, bringing increasing chances with strong wind gusts through the end of the week.

[4] CABQ reminds community of fire dangers as Independence Day rolls around – The City of Albuquerque is reminding residents about the dangers of illegal fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July. Last year, AFR responded to 140 outside fires and four structure fires around the holiday. The agencies remind residents that it’s illegal to use fireworks within city limits, so read the label to ensure the fireworks you’re using are legal.

[5] ABQ BioPark elephant celebrates 50th birthday – Alice, the Asian Elephant, celebrated her 50th birthday at the ABQ BioPark, most elephants only live to be about 48. The elephants like to go on long walks around their habitat and take part in water aerobics, especially during the long, hot summer months.
