[1] Man handed second life sentence for the murder of a woman – A man convicted of killing two people will now be serving a second life sentence. In 2019 Cayla Campos witnessed an armed robbery. She and her boyfriend were driving around a park playing Pokémon Go before bullets came through her car, killing her. A judge sentenced Izaiah Garcia to a life sentence for killing Campos. Garcia is already serving a life sentence for the 2019 murder of Sean Markey at a house party.
[2] ‘They are the drivers of crime in our community’: BCSO speaks on teen crime – After calling youth a driving force for crime in the county, Sheriff John Allen and District Attorney Sam Bregman are calling for changes to the children’s criminal code. Bregman said the code has not been updated since the 1970. He says children are not held in juvenile detention unless their crime involves a gun and probation for them is ineffective.
[3] Rain today but drier on Independence Day – Drier air throughout much of the atmosphere will continue to push the Monsoonal moisture to the southeastern half of the region despite hotter and drier air in The Metro, an isolated shower to two may briefly form in the afternoon before rain activity moves eastward. Most will reach the 80’s and 90’s today with some pockets of high 70’s in far-northern areas, while areas far to the south may reach 100 degrees.
[4] OSI: Some insurance companies aren’t providing state-ordered wildfire coverage – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and The Office of the Superintendent of Insurance issued an emergency order requiring insurers to pay out a $5,000 advance to anyone displaced by the wildfires. Now, the OSI says they are receiving complaints that some insurers are not making the payments and are creating barriers for policy holders.
[5] Moving Arts Española looking for new location after lease won’t be renewed – A nationally recognized arts program is looking for a new home. Moving Arts Espanola has been in the community for the last 17 years with hundreds of kids taking part every year. The organization says the lease on its current building is not being renewed. Now, they have until December to find a new home base.
