LA Fleet Week: If you like tall ships, then you won’t want to miss the Festival of Sail

If prefer vintage ships over modern-day military ones, don’t fret: The Los Angeles Maritime Institute has you covered during LA Fleet Week.

LA Fleet Week, the ninth iteration of which will run through Memorial Day, is a celebration of the country’s seafaring military branches, with both an aircraft carrier and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter set to dock in the Los Angeles Harbor.

But the Maritime Institute will offer a different flavor of ship during its Festival of Sail.

That festival, which will take place as part of Fleet Week at the LA Waterfront, in San Pedro, will offer myriad activities and events — some free and some not — centering around vintage tall ships. There will be historic reenactments and cannon battles. There will be lessons on knot tying and sailing history. And there will even be the chance to tour the ships — or sail on them.

Here’s a look at some of the daily events you can enjoy during the Festival of Sail, which will take place from Friday to Monday, May 24-27:

9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Tall ship deck tours and free tall ship village activities, such as Sea Scout Maritime demos, kid-friendly STEAM Activities, historic reenactments, knot tying  and other crafts.
