NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The La Plata County Public Health Department (LPCPHD) has reported the first human case of West Nile virus for 2024. The department is taking the opportunity to remind residents and visitors to take precautions to protect themselves from the virus commonly spread by infected mosquitos.

Second mosquito season hits Albuquerque

According to a La Plata County press release, the time between the mosquito bite and symptom onset can be from two to 14 days. However, most people infected with West Nile don’t develop any symptoms. For those who do, symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

There is no treatment for the virus other than supportive care and there is no vaccine to prevent it. Officials are saying to seek a healthcare provider if you think you o ra family member has West Nile and use insect repellants, limit activities where and when mosquitos are active, wear protective clothing, and mosquito-proof your home. More information about insect repellants can be found on the EPA’s website.
