Melbourne electro-pop artist LASHES has returned with her latest single for this year, unveiling the moody Avalanche For You.
The new track sees the eclectic Victorian musician teaming up with frequent collaborator Michael Belsar (Hayden James/Bob Moses) for a hypop-influenced gem. Originally beginning life in 2022, the track initially known as Final Fantasy, in keeping with its original concept.
As LASHES explains, it was “about being stuck in an RPG video game set in a sci-fi universe where you have to work together to make it to the end, only to be slaughtered on a hill by your partner – which was somewhat foretelling.”
The song later took on a new life when it was revisited earlier this year and the lyrics and production were both updated. Soon, it evolved into a deeper exploration of the feelings that arise from becoming addicted to toxic cycles, and the unsettling impact that they may have.
“Sonically, we wanted it to emulate ‘fight or flight’, the anxiety of walking on eggshells and the confusion you feel when living in a skewed version of reality,” LASHES explains.
Initially launching her journey into the world of music at age seven, LASHES’ lifelong passion for musical experimentation and heart-on-sleeve songwriting later took on a life of its own, with the Ballarat-raised artist sharing music under her own name in 2018.
Working with a number of local producers over the years, LASHES’ profile has risen significantly over the past 18 months thanks to support slots for names like Boo Seeka and Cry Club, and slots on festivals such as Groovin The Moo and Split Milk.
The release of Avalanche For You follows on from the arrival of Hollow back in February, with the new tracks serving as a taster of the bounty of new music still to come from LASHES.
The new single also coincides with LASHES’ live performances alongside merci, mercy, with a Ballarat show scheduled for Friday, September 20th. Tickets to this performance are available now.
