On Friday, Aug. 2, Leftover Salmon and Daniel Donato Cosmic Country blew through The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. for a special performance honoring the music and legacy of the great Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 82 on August 1. To pay tribute to the endlessly innovative artist who gave shape to today’s jam, psych and alt-bluegrass scenes, the bands presented sets specially tailored to his staples, with Donato joining the foundational Colorado jam ensemble for the bulk of its tried and true “Workingman’s Salmon” set.

Friday’s celebration began with a pre-show from the rising progressive bluegrass quartet Sicard Hollow at Garcia’s, The Cap’s neighboring sister venue. After an opening set from Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, who worked a treatment of the traditional Grateful Dead staple “Jack-A-Roe,” Leftover Salmon stormed the stage for another presentation of its beloved “Workingman’s Salmon” program, which shows the band running through the entire setlist of the Dead’s legendary 1970 album Workingman’s Dead.

Salmon ran through the album in its original sequence, beginning with “Uncle John’s Band” and keeping on through “Cumberland Blues” before it snuck in a treatment of Bonnie Dobson’s “Morning Dew,” which was first featured by the Dead on its 1967 self-titled debut album. Donato joined the band during “Dire Wolf,” the third track in the set, then remained through the set’s end, when the ensemble followed the album sequence with New Riders of the Purple Sage’s “I Don’t Know You.” Leftover Salmon’s tribute was made particularly potent by its staging at the legendary Capitol Theatre, which was also the site of the February 1971 Dead performance that sourced the bonus live tracks featured on the 50th-anniversary edition of Workingman’s Dead.
