Listen: Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Receives Dolby Atmos Remaster for 40th Anniversary

RMAG news

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, Prince’s endlessly iconic sixth album and quasi-autobiographical music film. To celebrate this landmark for a project that is often hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises have unveiled a new reissue, mixed for Dolby Atmos’ multi-channel sound system.

The immersive new release was engineered from the original master tapes by Chris James, who originally joined the Prince camp for 1991’s Diamonds and Pearls and has since mixed a number of archival releases from the late icon’s immense Paisley Park vault. It is available now on Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon Music.

Purple Rain’s remaster is only one of many projects in process to honor the anniversary year. Celebration 2024 commenced yesterday at Paisley Park, continuing an eight-year tradition of collectively cherishing the artist’s immortal legacy in his Chanhassen, Minn. home, studio and soul reflection. The festivities will run through June 24, featuring performances from Morris Day, The Revolution, New Power Generation, Lix Warfield, Taj Farrant and special guests. As part of the tribute to Purple Rain’s 40th, attendees will also have the opportunity to experience a first preview of scenes from the upcoming Purple Rain musical.
