The babies are headed to the real world. According to a recent report from Deadline, the hit Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats is getting a live-action/CGI hybrid movie. Jason Moore (Sisters, Shotgun Wedding) is set to direct the project with Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day writing alongside Streeter Seidell, the latter of whom is also a head writer on SNL.

What do we know about the Rugrats movie?

Currently, nothing else is known about the movie other than the fact that it will involve some sort of hybrid style of live-action and CGI animation. A separate report from Variety notes that the film will largely be in live-action but that the babies themselves will be CGI. No official casting decisions have been announced, either.

Originally premiering in 1991, Rugrats was one of Nickelodeon’s original “Nicktoons” and only ran for 65 episodes during its initial run. However, after the series became a massive hit, more episodes were produced, and the series would go on to air more than 150 episodes across nine seasons before ending in 2004.

Throughout its run, the series would also receive three animated movies as well as a sequel series titled All Grown Up! In 2021, a reboot of the series produced by the original creative team of Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain was released on Paramount+.

The series mainly focused on the adventures of the titular Rugrats, including Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil and Lil DeVille, and Tommy’s cousin, Angelica. Later seasons would introduce characters Dil Pickles (Tommy’s little brother), Susie Carmichael, and Kimi Watanabe-Finster, Chuckie’s adopted sister. Cheryl Chase, Tara Strong, Kath Soucie, Dionne Quan, Cree Summer, Jack Riley, Melanie Chartoff, and David Doyle starred in the series, among others.
