Los Alamos CCC warning of phone, text scam

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRQE) – The Los Alamos County Customer Care Center (CCC) is warning of a scam showing up as text messages and phone calls that started going out July 1. The sender or caller ID claims to be coming from the CCC.

The CCC is reminding anyone receiving calls or texts from 505-662-8333 that the Los Alamos County Municipal Court has confirmed they’re not calling or texting jurors who didn’t attend jury duty. There is also a lot of fraudulent information in these communications. For instance, the text message people receive says “This is Sgt. Troy Hughes Los Alamos County Sheriff’s Office!” Hughes is a fire chief, not a sergeant, from the Los Alamos Fire Department, not the sheriff’s office.

Also, the messages direct targets to go to the “lobby” at the Justice Center to access a kiosk system and pay a fine. There are no kiosks for payment at the Justice Center. The messages also reference case file numbers and citation IDs that are not legitimate.

The CCC urges anyone receiving calls or texts from 505-662-8333 to call the CCC directly to discuss it at 505-662-8222.
