Malibu Chili Cook-Off spiced up the ‘fun’ in fundraising on Labor Day weekend

The Malibu Chili Cook-Off offered up more than sales of tastes, or bowls, of chili on Saturday during the event’s first full day of family-friendly fun.

The event included a chili competition (of course), but also a skateboard contest, DJ sets, an artisan marketplace, carnival rides and food trucks.

The public had a chance to vote for their favorite chili — meat and vegan options were available for purchase — on Friday through 3 p.m. Sunday for the People’s Choice award. Chili contest winners were scheduled to be announced at 6 p.m. Sunday. Chili prices varied by the vendor. malibuchilicookoff.org/chili-faqs/

Skateboarders were able to show off their skills and techniques on the mini-ramp, presented by Bones Love Milk, during the weekend.

The 5th Johnny Strange Legacy Skate Contest was held on Saturday. Registration for the contest was on-site, and open for all skill levels in one of two divisions — intermediate and advanced. Prizes were given out to the top three in each division. malibuchilicookoff.org/skate/

The Labor Day weekend event, Aug. 30-Sept. 2, is a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu. bgcmalibu.org

If you go: 1-8 p.m. Sept. 2. Admission $40; free for ages 5 and younger. Admission is by online purchase only (malibuchilicookoff.org/buy-tix/). Carnival rides are an extra charge. Location, 23575 Civic Center Way, Malibu. malibuchilicookoff.org/info-faqs. malibuchilicookoff.org
