Maybe Hugo has released his long-awaited debut EP, the fittingly titled, Maybe, Might Be, Could Be.
The five-track EP is a suite of easy-listening, boasting an indomitable groove, clean production, and vocals so gentle and fluid that they hint at androgyny. The melodies are bright, cushioned in deft, willowy instrumentation – the kind of music with an easy intimacy that is well-suited to the decks of a warmly-lit speakeasy.
Hugo Dahlen-Flight, the artist behind the moniker who creates all his music from his home studio, is solely responsible for the production and songwriting.
He says of creating the EP, “Going into the writing process, I didn’t really have a specific message I wanted to push with each song. I wanted to let the listener interpret the music themselves, as I’ve often found many of my favourite songs gave me this exact feeling!
“Maybe it provides you warmth, whereas someone might have a gloomier perspective on it; the choice is with you! That’s where the name of ‘Maybe, Might Be, Could Be’ stems from, where it gives each listener the chance to convey what they may hear or feel themselves.”
The EP was mixed by Ed Long via Soundrays Studio in Berlin. But the songwriting took place in Tandanya/Adelaide, as did the filming of the accompanying music video for focus track Fall in Line, directed by Alex Salkicevic.
Of the music video, Dahlen-Flight says, “The clip plays on the essence of split personalities, hence my artist name ‘Maybe Hugo’. We used mirrors to help represent duplicate personas/personalities and to convey where someone may or may not be going.”
Maybe Hugo cut his teeth as a DJ, where he supported Bag Raiders, Young Franco, and Keli Holiday, among others, and played side stages at Laneway and Wildlands Festivals. His first live shows will be announced in late 2024.
