Memento Mori Festival is coming to Los Angeles to celebrate death

In early September, the historic Philosophical Research Society (PRS) on Los Feliz Boulevard will transform into a haven for those intrigued by life’s most profound—and often avoided—topic: death.

In partnership with the Morbid Anatomy collective, PRS will host a day-long celebration on Saturday, Sept. 7, marking the release of Joanna Ebenstein’s deeply personal new book, “Memento Mori: Contemplating Death to Live a Better Life.”

Ebenstein’s newest book explores how contemplating death can lead to a more meaningful life. Through a 12-week program featuring personal stories, historical insights, meditations, and exercises, readers are guided to embrace mortality, reducing fear and enhancing their appreciation of life.

The day begins with a symposium from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., which will feature talks from prominent figures in the fields of art and death studies, including Morbid Anatomy’s Founder Joanna Ebenstein, Sarah Chavez of the Order of the Good Death, and authors Asti Huvstedt and Colin Dickey. The discussions will delve into the concept of “memento mori,” a Latin phrase meaning “remember you will die,” encouraging attendees to reflect on mortality as a means to enrich their lives.

Following the intellectual deep dive, the event will transition into the Danse Macabre Afterparty from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The evening will also feature a phantasmagoria-inspired magic lantern show, dark disco by DJ SV68 and the Mystical Sea Hag, and Tarot readings by Lisa De La O Wyman.

The weekend’s exploration of death and culture extends into Sunday, Sept. 8, with curated experiences at several Los Angeles locations. Highlights include a Death Cafe at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a tour of the Museum of Jurassic Technology, and an intimate Death Meditation in Brentwood.

Tickets for individual events or discounted packages, including VIP options, are available. More information can be found at morbidanatomy.com.
