Midjourney AI generator opens up, offering free images to all

Midjourney has opened up its AI image generator platform to all users, with an enticing trial offer. The incentive means anyone can generate as many as 25 images, following a change of tack from the San Francisco-based company.

Previously, users had to working through a set of awkward text prompts on Discord to utilize Midjourney’s image-creation tools. The AI startup charted a different path last year with the launch of a dedicated website, which Midjourney has now taken a step further.

Midjourney’s native site was a welcome development, but initially, it was restricted to those who had generated 10,000 images via Discord. That is not an open-door policy, to say the least, but now there is accessibility for all.

To get involved in the limited free trials, all you need is a Google or Discord account and from there, you can proceed to experiment and create your desired images, as confirmed by Midjourney CEO David Holz in a Discord announcement on Wednesday.

Those with a Discord history can log in to retrieve their previous image generations.

The Midjourney web experience is now open to everyone. We’re also temporarily turning on free trials to let you check it out. Have fun! pic.twitter.com/rcmP0UD8PV

How to use the Midjourney image generator

Once logged in, users should navigate to the bar on the left of the screen, showing tabs for different options and tasks.

As suggested, ‘Explore’ provides insight to images made by other users, giving inspiration on style and design. Before jumping into the ‘Create’ menu, there is a short video that acts as a demo on how to get started with Midjourney. The final step is to use the text space at the top of the page to type in your prompt. Then AI image generator works its magic.

An interesting element to the four images produced from the prompt is the ability to refine it. “Strong” or “Subtle” can change the tone of the graphic, as well as change the focus and other alterations.

After using up the 25 image quota included in the free trial, users will need a subscription to continue with Midjourney. The platform offers Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega plans with varying costs and benefits.
