More monsoon moisture will start streaming into New Mexico Thursday, bringing scattered showers and storms. Temperatures will start trending a little cooler by next week.
It’s yet another hot day all across New Mexico with a record high temperature broken in Roswell. High temperatures are in the 90s and triple-digits across even more of the state today. Spotty monsoon storms have developed today across the northern mountains, west-central New Mexico, and the Bootheel. These storms will continue to move clockwise around a high pressure system that’s centered in far east-central New Mexico. The high pressure will be sliding into West Texas tonight, drawing up more monsoon moisture into western New Mexico overnight. This will bring spotty showers in western New Mexico overnight into Thursday morning.
Showers and storms will bring scattered rainfall across the western two-thirds of New Mexico (from the Pecos River Valley and west) Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will see the biggest drop across western and northern New Mexico where highs will be in the 80s, but triple-digit heat continues in eastern and southeastern New Mexico. Showers and storms could bring heavy rainfall over burn scar areas in the northern part of the state. These storms will end Thursday night.
This active monsoon pattern will continue into the weekend, with rain chances again mainly staying west of the Pecos River Valley into western New Mexico. Temperatures will be closer to normal for this time of year by this weekend for areas along and west of the Rio Grande Valley. Locally heavy mountain rainfall will be possible through the weekend, which could cause burn scar flash flooding.
Monsoon moisture continues though into early next week, with even more afternoon showers and thunderstorms beginning next Tuesday. This could bring even heavier rainfall across parts of the state. Temperatures will finally near average all across New Mexico with the increase in monsoon moisture.
