Monsoon storms continue through the weekend

The monsoon will continue to remain active everyday this week. Heavier rain will be on the way to parts of the state later this week.

It’s another active afternoon with scattered and isolated showers and thunderstorms across most of New Mexico. The driest area today has been northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado where some drier upper-level air has moved in. Temperatures also continue to trend slightly cooler across most of the state as well. Showers and storms will fizzle out early tonight with drier weather to start the day Wednesday. A Flood Watch continues for burn scar areas through late this evening.

More showers and storms will develop Wednesday afternoon, especially across western New Mexico and over mountain ranges. These storms will slowly move to the northeast, bringing rain into the Rio Grande Valley and the Albuquerque Metro by the evening. There is another slight risk of burn scar flash flooding on Wednesday. There will be slight downtick in storm coverage again on Thursday, except for eastern New Mexico where we will see an increasing chance for rain.

A backdoor front will move through eastern New Mexico Thursday night into Friday morning. This will bring even more monsoon moisture into the state. That will produce scattered showers and storms across New Mexico Friday afternoon, with numerous storms in southeastern New Mexico. Storms on Friday will be capable of very heavy rain, bringing a high threat of burn scar flash flooding.

There is a lot of uncertainty about how long the moisture and rain chances will stick around this weekend, and even where. But there will still be isolated storms regardless across parts of New Mexico with drier weather for Labor Day.
