Muhammad Syed pleads no contest to two second degree murder charges

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Muhammad Syed, convicted of killing a Muslim man in 2022, took a plea deal Tuesday and decided not to fight two other murder cases. Syed pleaded no contest to two second degree murder charges for the shooting deaths of Mohammud Afzall Hussain and Naeem Hussein.

Judge Britt Baca accepted the plea deal and laid out the sentencing agreement. “Second degree murder carries up to 15 years of imprisonment, followed by two years of parole. Those two charges are going to run consecutive to each other, which means one right after the other,” Judge Baca said in court Tuesday.

Syed was found guilty in March of first degree murder for the shooting death of Aftab Hussein. Syed is facing a life sentence in that case. The plea deal includes a provision that he can still appeal his conviction in the Aftab Hussein trial. A sentencing date for Syed has not been set.
