Netflix has decided to cancel That ’90s Show after two seasons. The sequel to Fox’s That ’70s Show (1998-2006) premiered on the streaming giant on January 19, 2023. The first season has 10 episodes. The sophomore season came out in two equal parts of eight episodes each, on June 27, 2024, and August 22, 2024. The cancellation comes after reports of lukewarm audience response to the latest chapter of the teen sitcom.

Kurtwood Smith reacts to That ’90s Show being canceled by Netflix

Netflix has decided not to renew That ’90s Show for a third season or Part 4 (as the platform now lists all installments of the series as Parts 1, 2, and 3). Kurtwood Smith, who portrayed Red Forman in both That ’70s Show and the sequel, took to Instagram to express his disappointment about the cancellation.

“I know you have been asking me when season 3 is coming, but I have tough news…Netflix will not be renewing,” Smith wrote. “I just want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of the fans everywhere who supported and watched the show. You have come up to me in random parts of the world when I’m traveling and reached out to me through social media and just been so wonderful,” he added.

That ’90s Show revolves around Leia, a teenager navigating life in the mid-90s while living with her grandparents, Red and Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp).

“I’ve said it before but it’s worth mentioning again…this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers and crew an actor could hope to work with,” Smith continued in his post.

Further, expressing his gratitude, he wrote, “Thanks for letting Red and Kitty, their grandkid, all their grandkids friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show and all of our wonderful guest cast members entertain you for two seasons.”

The RoboCop actor also revealed that they were planning to find another home for the series. “To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses…we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school,” he said.

Now, whether the show finds another home remains to be seen.
