New APS superintendent officially takes over the position

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The new superintendent for Albuquerque Public Schools is now officially on the job. Gabriella Duran Blakely stepped into her new role replacing Scott Elder who retired from the position when his contract expired. Prior to her new role, she served as the district’s Chief of Operations.

While she officially took over on Monday, Blakey has served as Acting superintendent since March. She already launched an administrative reorganization initiative aimed at improving reading and math proficiency and preparing students for life after graduation.

Blakey said they’re trying to begin her tenure on an optimistic tone and she wants that passed down to students. “If they hear us talking positively about their schools and about the work that we’re doing and how lucky they are to go to their school, then kids start feeling that sense of confidence. And then they can be proud of being smart in school,” said Blakey.

She is the 30th superintendent in the district’s 133-year history.
