New Mexico Department of Justice celebrates retirement of K9

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Justice is celebrating the retirement of their electronic scent detection K9. After more than four years working in the Internet Crimes Against Children Divison, Special Agent Joey is hanging up his vest.

Report: New Mexico facing significant wildfire potential for August, September

Joey assisted with searching and arrest warrants for illicit online materials including child sexual abuse. His Special Agent in Charge Owen Pena said he provided emotional support no matter where he was needed. “His presence brought comfort and reassurance to our team and other people when we would be on a scene and when there were kids involved he would also bring them comfort,” said Pena.

The department will add two new K9s, Special Agent Nyx and Gadget.
