New Severe Weather Alerts in Romania: Heatwave Followed by Strong Storms

Meteorologists issued, on Tuesday morning, a Code Orange warning of atmospheric instability, valid in more than half of the country in the next 24 hours. A yellow heat code is also in force for most of Muntenia and Moldova, as well as the southwest of Dobrogea.

Starting from Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. until Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., in Oltenia, most of Transylvania and Muntenia, the northern half of Moldova and locally in Banat and Maramureş, there will be periods of torrential showers, short-term wind gusts and gales, with gust speeds generally of 70…90 km/h, thunderstorm and hail. In short time intervals (1…3 hours) or through accumulation, the water quantities will be 25…40 l/sq m and in small areas more than 50…70 l/sq m.The counties in the rest of the country (with the exception of Constanţa and Tulcea counties) will be under a Yellow Code warning of atmospheric instability in the same time frame.

In Crisana, northwestern Transylvania and locally in Banat, Maramureş, Muntenia and Moldova, there will be torrential showers, wind intensifications (gusts of 50…70 km/h in general), gales, hail and electrical discharges. In short intervals of time or through accumulation, the water quantities will be 20…30 l/m2 and isolated over 40 l/m2.

On the other hand, for July 2nd, a Yellow Code warning of heatwave and high thermal discomfort was issued for most of Muntenia and Moldova, as well as the southwest of Dobrogea. In these regions, the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will slightly exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. Maximum temperatures will generally be 35…37 degrees. Locally, the minimums will not drop below 20 degrees, characterizing a tropical night.
