Newborn left in Hobbs baby box

HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – A newborn child was left in the baby box at Fire Station 1 in Hobbs for the second time in the past year.

The baby was “found to be healthy and well cared for when found by Hobbs Fire Department personnel,” according to the city. The newborn was taken to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital and is now in the custody of the Children, Youth, and Families Department.

The Safe Haven Baby Box is meant for people with newborn children and those up to 90 days old to surrender them without repercussions. It is an environmentally controlled incubator device that controls temperature and gives sufficient oxygen. It is equipped with a transparent door and safety alarm to immediately notify the operator(s) that an infant has been placed in the device.

The baby box at the fire station was used for the first time in September 2023.
