The Nobel prize in physics has been awarded to two researchers for their groundbreaking work on machines that learn.

John Hopfield at Princeton University and Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto were honoured for their pioneering work on artificial neural networks which underlie much of modern artificial intelligence.
