SAINT-DENIS, France – Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis sat on the front edge of the Stade de France pole vault pit late Monday night uncertain as to what to do next.
Duplantis had just had a close miss at the world record height of 20 feet, 6 inches, having already successfully defended his Olympic title with a 20-0 clearance.
Duplantis continued to sit in the pit. He sighed, looked at his father and coach Greg Duplantis in the stands, and then sighed again.
Then the crowd began to chant.
“One more!”
“One more!”
“One more!”
Duplantis would miss again but need little encouragement for what would be a successful clearance, the final jump of the night in a three-hour competition.
Duplantis, Swedish flag draped around his shoulders, took on a victory lap to, what else? Abba.
