Overcoming obesity is more difficult than most think

Dr. Viorel Dejeu, an internationally accredited surgeon specializing in bariatric and metabolic surgery and cofounder of Dejeu Medical Team, debunks this myth without hesitation: “People believe that obesity is solved only by restraining from food. If it were that simple, we wouldn’t have statistics showing that 60% of the population is overweight.”

Why, then, can’t you lose weight just by eating less? The causes are multiple, as Dr. Viorel Dejeu explains: “Obesity can be inherited genetically. If you fall into that category, simply reducing calorie intake won’t achieve much. Your body will burn very little and adapt quickly to any diet. Someone without this genetic trait will lose weight easily if they reduce calorie intake. Those without the genetic predisposition gain weight because they eat too much, but in doing so, they ruin their metabolism and enter the same vicious cycle. So, if you’re obese, you should eat 30% of what you eat now to lose a bit of weight and maintain it, which means staying hungry at every meal. Who can do that for the rest of their life?”

Many of Dr. Dejeu’s patients have been overweight since childhood. They can’t imagine what it’s like to be of normal weight.

High standard bariatric surgery and careful post-surgical management are the most effective methods to fight obesity. How do they help patients, and what needs do they fulfill?

They reduce the size of the stomach, helping patients feel full with the small amount the stomach needs.
They reduce the feeling of hunger, thus helping patients be satisfied with that small amount of food.
They reduce absorption at the intestinal level (in bypass surgeries), so not all the ingested food is absorbed.

Dr. Viorel Dejeu concludes: “There is no medication or diet that can surpass bariatric surgery. Nor will there be one very soon. Be assured, those of you who have undergone surgery, that you have chosen the best method. From now on, make sure to enjoy the results and maintain them for as long as possible! Good health, willpower, and confidence!”
