SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A popular geological feature often referred to as the “Toilet Bowl” on Lake Powell collapsed on Thursday, officials with the National Park Service confirmed.

The NPS said the popular “Double Arch” — which has also been called the “Toilet Bowl,” “Crescent Pool,” and “Hole in the Roof” — in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area collapsed on Aug. 8.

Officials said there were no injuries reported after the collapse. While the cause of the collapse is still unknown at this time, the NPS said changing water levels and erosion from waves on the lake are some suspected factors that contributed to the collapse.

“This event serves as a reminder of our responsibility and need to protect the mineral resources surrounding Lake Powell,” Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Michelle Kerns said.

The National Park Service said the arch was formed from Navajo sandstone that originated in the late Triassic to early Jurassic periods. Since it was formed, the NPS said the arch “has been subject to spalling and erosion from weather, wind, and rain.”

“These features have a life span that can be influenced or damaged by manmade interventions,” Kerns said. “While we don’t know what caused this collapse, we will continue to maintain our resource protection efforts on Lake Powell for future generations to enjoy.”

Kerns reminded visitors to leave no trace when visiting the area.
