Australian psych-rock outfit Pond has teamed up with MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden to reimagine “So Lo,” the fourth track on Pond’s 2024 record Stung! Though the original cut of “So Lo” is bright, funky and relaxed, VanWyngarden’s bass-heavy remix amps up the track’s intensity and danceability in typical MGMT fashion while also nodding to the sense of unadulterated joy Stung! brought for the band. Following Pond’s widely successful Australian tour, this release builds anticipation towards future tour stops, particularly North American shows, which the group shared alongside the delivery of new music.
As a longtime MGMT fan, Pond member and co-founder Jay Watson recalls being “stoked” to work with VanWyngarden and even more pleased to hear the product. According to Watson, the group asked VanWyngarden “if he could take ‘So-Lo’ further into the concrete New York late night.” “I love the darker chorus he made,” Watson stated, going so far as to remark that this addition “completely changes the feel of the melody.” Working towards a moonlit iteration of the song in listeners’ minds, Pond also released a visualizer by Raissa Pardini to accompany the remix on streaming platforms.
The release of the band’s North American tour dates precede the onset of Pond’s venture to the UK/EU at the end of the summer, which kicks off with a Southampton doubleheader on Sept. 24. The new age ensemble’s tour of England then continues with stops in Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol, and London, many of which feature support from Barbagallo. Pond will take the stage in Glasgow, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam in the fall. Following a three-night stint in Germany from Oct. 8-11, the group is set for one final showing abroad, set to take place Oct. 13 at Copenhagen’s Vega, co-billed with Denmark-natives The Jürgen Clubs.
The North American leg then begins on Nov. 11 at Boston’s Royale and continues down the East Coast with stops at New York’s Brooklyn Steel, Philadelphia’s Union Transfer and Washington’s famed 9:30 Club. Trekking north, they will participate in a series of shows in Pittsburgh, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis in November alongside multi-instrumentalist Fazerdaze. Escaping the winter weather, Pond will then make a number of West Coast appearances in Vancouver, British Columbia, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and San Francisco before concluding the run with a Dec. 5 performance at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.
