Disney has officially found its director for the upcoming The Princess Diaries 3. Adele Lim has been tapped to helm the highly anticipated project, according to Deadline.

Lim worked in Hollywood for more than 20 years, but is best known for co-writing the hit Crazy Rich Asians. Lim has gone on to write the 2021 Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as direct and produce 2023’s Joy Ride, which she also co-wrote with Family Guy writers Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao.

“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” said Lim in a statement to Deadline. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

What do we know about Princess Diaries 3?

Currently, not much is known about the third entry in the film. Anne Hathaway — who starred in the original film and its sequel — has given promising updates on the project over the years, but hasn’t teased much else. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, Julie Andrews — who played the grandmother to Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis — has said that she doesn’t think it makes sense for her to return for the third film.

The original The Princess Diaries was released in 2001 and starred Hathaway as an American teenager who later learns she is heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. The film itself was based on Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name and co-starred Julie Andrews. The release was met with near-universal acclaim, propelling Hathaway into superstardom and earning more than $165 million at the box office, vastly more than what many thought it would due to its G-rating and subject matter.

A sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released in 2004 and saw Hathaway and Andrews return in their roles. That film continued the story from the original and saw Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis returning to Genovia to eventually be crowned Queen. That film was also a massive success for Disney, earning $134 million at the box office, although the reaction to the movie was worse than that of its predecessor.
