Record and near-record heat continues this week

The heat continues this week with record and near-record high temperatures through Thursday. Rain chances remain low, until more moisture returns late this week.

It is a hot and mostly dry start to the week across New Mexico. Temperatures are in the 90s and triple-digits again across most of the state. A few spotty storms have developed in western New Mexico and southern Colorado, but most of the state remains dry. A few spotty showers may stick around west-central New Mexico through late tonight. It will be a warm night too with calm conditions and clear to mostly clear skies.

It is going to stay hot and mostly dry through the middle of this week as a strong monsoon high pressure system settles directly over New Mexico. Temperatures will climb to record and near-records highs through Thursday afternoon across New Mexico. A few more storms are likely across northern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. It’s a similar story on Wednesday, with spotty storms across northern and western New Mexico, along with southern Colorado, but isolated storm chances also return to the Sacramento Mountains.

The high pressure system responsible for the record heat this week will begin sliding eastward on Thursday. This will allow for more monsoon moisture to move into the state. This will bring better chances for rain to areas along and west of the central mountain chain, including the Rio Grande Valley, starting Thursday afternoon. We will see more showers and storms Friday afternoon too as temperatures begin slightly cooling off.

Temperatures will continue this slow cooling trend through the weekend and into early next week, but highs will still be slightly warmer than normal for the end of August. Monsoon moisture will continue across the state, keeping isolated to scattered storm chances around the state, except southeastern New Mexico, into early next week.
