ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 has learned Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina said he intentionally did not turn on his body camera after causing a crash that seriously injured another driver. That’s according to the department’s Internal Affairs report on the February incident at Central and Alvarado.
That’s where Chief Medina, with his wife in the car, said he heard gunshots and accelerated into the intersection against a red light.
The chief told investigators he purposefully did not hit record because he was invoking his Fifth Amendment right to not self-incriminate. However, the IA investigation found department policy does not allow officers to do that. The chief later acknowledged the violation when he accepted and signed two letters of reprimand. One of the letters was for not activating his camera and the other was for failing to operate his vehicle safely.
