Romania’s Proposal for European Commissioner: Victor Negrescu

RMAG news

Victor Negrescu, one of the European Parliament’s Vice-Presidents, is Romania’s proposal for a position as European Commissioner. The proposal is not 100% backed by the whole political class in Romania, but it is enough that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu backs it.

Even the Liberals, who are in the same coalition with the Socialists, showed signs of disagreement, as they would’ve wanted to be consulted regarding the nomination first.

I went with a name; he is the current vice president of the EP, Mr. Victor Negrescu. Naturally, we also made a calendar deadline; I hope that by Monday at the latest, we will submit the proposal from the Government of Romania; this attribute is exclusively for the Prime Minister, but, as is normal and as I have already spoken with President Nicolae Ciuca, we will discuss in the next few days. Also, institutionally, if we want a certain normality, I will also discuss it with the president of Romania because the president is the representative of Romania in the European Council, and it is customary to coordinate these negotiations.

Romania’s PM Marcel Ciolacu on the designation of Victor Negrescu as European Commissioner

Romania didn’t abide by the EC President’s request that all the countries make two proposals, a woman and a man. Yet Romania forwarded a single proposal, Victor Negrescu, and Romania’s PM justified his decision.

I still have things from the past. I don’t like someone imposing something on me, like during communism. I saw that 10-14 other states had the same problem as me with the past, let no one impose anything on us.

However, Romania still doesn’t have a portfolio for Victor Negrescu, as this will be decided in the coming days.
