Romania’s Spot Market Electricity Prices Hit Record Highs

The price of electricity on Romania’s spot market has broken record after record during this period and has been the highest in Europe for five days.

According to data published by the exchange operator OPCOM, the average price of electricity for Wednesday on the spot market is 1,175 lei per MWh, with a peak of 4,300 lei per MWh between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, which represents an absolute record for the Romanian market.

Compared to the rest of the European countries, since last Saturday our country is the most expensive market, with huge differences compared to the cheapest ones.
On Wednesday, July 17,  the cheapest countries are Finland, where energy today averages only 10 euros per MWh, followed by Sweden, with 17 euros, and Norway, with 24 euros. In Romania, energy costs 236 euros. Other countries with expensive energy are Hungary – 230 euros, and Bulgaria – 227 euros.
“Regarding the prices on the PZU (spot market – n.r.), this market has also recorded periods of significant price increases, influenced by several factors, such as weather conditions, energy demand, availability of production resources and external economic factors , says the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
“The fact that we have more renewable energy production capacity is a good thing, overall. Otherwise, we would have probably paid even more, because electricity would have cost even more during the day,” the minister added.
