As if I didn’t already have enough reasons to love May, what with its many celebrations, both real and imagined on my part, it is also the month of the Flower Moon.
Therefore on May 23, I was especially looking forward to a visit from the festooned moon, named after the abundant flowers that bloom in May. Although some might argue that he wasn’t sporting a flower crown, I can only tell you that I saw a big round full moon covered with spring flowers.
“Would you mind just hanging over the courtyard tonight instead of talking here at the garden window?” I asked Mr. Moon as his shadow appeared.
He began floating gracefully toward the purple bougainvillea that grows over the fence housing my little courtyard.
“I’ll meet you there in a moment,” I said as I scurried out to the front porch swing.
I wanted to talk to him about some of the flowers for which he was named this month. The night-blooming jasmine that rings around my crepe myrtle tree was having its first summer bloom and the fragrance was alluring. No wonder it’s also known as the Queen of the Night.
“I’ve wondered, does the aroma reach high up in the sky to where you are?” I asked.
“Nature is everywhere,” the wise moon responded.
The perfume from the jasmine that grows over my backyard fence seeps through my bedroom window, I tell Mr. Moon.
I love the scent that soothes me into a summer slumber.
