Silents Synced: Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ to Receive Cinematic Pairing with ‘Nosferatu’

RMAG news

On October 4, Silents Synced will present its first installment, which doubles as a theatrical deliverable, offering an amalgamation of the 1922-released silent horror picture Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror with a pair of early aughts albums by Radiohead: Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001).

Using the visual parameters of Nosferatu’s German Expressionist stylings, which is wrapped into a 1 hour and 21-minute time frame, the musical pairing will elicit notes of electronica, ambient, and art pop leans from Kid A. In contrast, the musician’s follow-up features elements of experimental rock and jazz tendencies in its presentation, making for a probing fusion of sounds and visuals, exemplifying the artistic ties between film and music.

Previously, the CEO and creator of Silents Synced, Josh Frank, introduced the project during a sitdown with Deadline, telling the news outlet, “Silents Synced is a strategic format to draw new audiences to cinemas for a communal music experience like no other.”

He continued, “The question for independent theater operators has become what can we do to inspire people to leave their homes outside of Hollywood blockbusters films? While traditional moviegoers will always be our lifeblood, music fans will go to greater lengths for a shared experience. They are a fundamentally new audience for us all. With these essential artists and our distribution partner, CineLife Entertainment, we seek to inspire people to gather in cinemas and invigorate independent theaters in a totally new way to help them with engaging and unique events.”

With the first semblance of the fused format on the books, the folks behind the project also mentioned their follow-up, which will apply music by R.E.M. to Buster Keaton’s classic, Sherlock Jr. Bertis Downs, manager for R.E.M., commented, “The guys thought it seems like a good idea and they like the uncanny way their music and Buster Keaton’s Sherlock, Jr., match up — kind of perfect.  What a great and unlikely way of presenting great art.”

Phase two will be offered in 2025, and more films are expected to be synced to choice albums from They Might Be Giants,  Pixies, Amon Tobin, and more.
