Simone Biles claims silver medal in Olympic floor exercise

PARIS – Simone Biles lost her bid for an eighth Olympic gold medal, her fourth of the Paris Games, with a pair of high-flying yet error-filled routines at Bercy Arena on the last day of the gymnastics competition and in perhaps her final Olympic appearance.

Biles had to settle for the silver medal in the floor exercise Monday after finishing a disappointing fifth place on the balance beam 90 minutes earlier.

Biles likely would have clinched her eighth career gold on the floor were it not for a pair of mistakes that cost her 0.600 in deductions.

Instead, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the event with a score of 14.166, 0.33 ahead of Biles. It was Biles’ first loss in an Olympic or World Championships floor exercise final. She has won six Worlds floor titles.

Biles landed out of bounds and then took another step back on her first tumbling pass and then stepped out of bounds again on her final pass.

Team USA’s Jordan Chiles was third at 13.766.
