SNAP benefits, eligibility requirements expanding in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) –  Many New Mexicans who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will see their benefits increase come October 1, 2024. On Monday, the state also announced other changes to the program, including extended certification periods and expanded eligibility.

SNAP recipients age 60 or older, as well as those with disabilities, will see an increase in their state supplement, raising the minimum benefit from $32 to $100 per month. The state’s Health Care Authority said the increase will assist more than 26,451 households.

“No New Mexican should ever have to go hungry. By expanding SNAP access and increasing benefits, we’re making sure more families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities have the support they need to live with dignity and security,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a news release. “These changes are a step forward in our ongoing efforts to reduce hunger and strengthen the well-being of our communities.”

Other changes that will go into place include an expansion of the renewal (certification) period for benefits, which will be extended from 12 months up to 36 months for SNAP customers aged 60 or older and for those with disabilities, who do not have earned income.

The SNAP eligibility guidelines will also increase from 165% to 200% of the federal poverty limit for all SNAP customers. The state said this change will allow approximately 67,697 additional New Mexican households to qualify for essential food assistance.
